This week, it is a very fun week for our first graders. On Monday, we celebrated and learned all about leap day (see post below). Tuesday, we began our superhero week because we are learning the IR/ ER/ UR sound. We had a fun time making our Superhero masks! Today, we are celebrating our 120th day of first grade AND Dr. Seuss's birthday! We are now 120 days smarter! We made 120 day ties, read Dr. Seuss books, watched the movie "The Lorax", graphed goldfish for Dr. Seuss's book "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish", found a comfy reading spot and read around the room, did exercises in 120 seconds, drew what we thought we would look like at 120 years old, and learned about Dr. Seuss. Wow! That is a lot! Friday, the students are invited to dress as superheroes for their IR/ER/UR spelling test!

Today, Wednesday, March 4, our class got to do a VERY fun science experiment! First, we read, "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" by Dr. Seuss! It is about a man who sees Oobleck fall from the sky as rain. Then, we learned all about solids and liquids, and discussed the characteristics of each. Finally, we made predictions about whether oobleck was a solid or a liquid. We found out that it can be both! :)
Each student then got the chance to make their own bag of oobleck with cornstarch and water. They then had to draw a picture of what the oobleck looked like, think of describing words to describe it, and then state whether they first thought oobleck was a solid or a liquid. The students LOVED this fun science activity. One student even said, "This is more fun than a backflip!". HAHA! :) On Tuesday, March 3, Our first grade class celebrated Dr. Seuss Day, or "Read Across America Day". We had SOO much fun! We dressed in our pajamas and had a fun and relaxing day! We did Dr. Seuss projects, such as our Dr. Seuss hats and bow ties, and we read many Dr. Seuss books! We even had a chance to have a reading party, where we read all around the room! We used our chairs and reading spots, and we cuddled up with our blankets and stuffed animals! We LOVE to read!
We can't wait for the many fun Dr. Seuss projects and activities that we'll do throughout March! Each school day, students are able to earn classroom dollars for good behavior choices, being a friend, helping others, or trying their best on their work. They learn responsibility by having to hold on to their classroom dollars throughout the year. Check out the pictures to see some of the students shopping at our most recent Dr. Seuss store!
Welcome to the fourth quarter, first graders. We are now in our final weeks of school. We will have many fun activities planned for the upcoming weeks, but we still need to work hard on our class work!
Look below for pictures from our spring projects and events! Here is an interesting video that we watched in class. It is a biography all about the famous author, Dr. Seuss!
Dr. Seuss is the first grade author study in District 109. We have been learning reading skills, writing concepts, and lessons through out the year with the use of Dr. Seuss's popular children's books. This past week, leading up to Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2), we did many fun activities in class. First, we read the ever-so-popular book, "The Cat in the Hat" and discussed the characters, the problem in the book, the solution, and where the story happened (Setting). We also had the pleasure of watching Justin Bieber (Eek!) read "The Cat in the Hat" to the students through a You Tube video. To expand the lesson, the students responded to the writing prompt: "Would you want the Cat in the Hat to come to your house on a rainy day?". The ideas they came up with were so cute! We also read the popular book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go" and talked about how the children can do anything they want to and can reach any dream, as long as they make good choices and always try their best. We did a writing prompt: "When I Grow Up" and each child was able to share what their dream/goal is when they grow up. After each child shared their dream, we talked about what good choices they can make to reach their dream! Attention all Room 117 students: Remember your first grade teacher when you are all famous! :) We will finish this fun project into the upcoming week. On Friday, We created our own Cat in the Hats and used our literacy skills in the process! Each child was given a different "Word family" to create a list of rhyming words. Some students were given short vowel word families and some students were given long vowel families! They were each up to the challenge and did a great job! They then listed their rhyming words on their hats. See below for the finished projects! Next week, we will have the chance to try "Green Eggs and Ham" and watch a short biography video on our famous author, Dr. Seuss. |
